Apple has officially released watchOS 11.1, the first major update to the operating system that powers the Apple Watch. This update, released on October 28, 2024, brings several new features and improvements, including a groundbreaking sleep apnea detection feature.
Key Features of watchOS 11.1
- Sleep Apnea Detection: One of the standout features of watchOS 11.1 is the ability to detect sleep apnea. Using the Apple Watch’s accelerometer, the device can monitor small movements at the wrist that are associated with interruptions in normal respiratory patterns. This data is tracked through a new metric called Breathing Disturbances, which can be viewed in the Health app.
- Apple Intelligence Features: With watchOS 11.1, Apple Watch users can take advantage of Apple Intelligence features when their iPhones are nearby. This includes notification summaries and Focus Mode, which helps reduce interruptions by showing only the most important notifications.

How to Update to watchOS 11.1
Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone > Go to the General section > Select Software Update > Download and install watchOS 11.1.
Make sure your Apple Watch is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 50% battery or is placed on a charger during the update process.
