Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is on the cusp of launching its commercial 4G services in India. As anticipation builds, the state-owned telecommunications giant has revealed a new logo symbolizing its commitment to providing secure, affordable, and reliable services. Additionally, BSNL has rolled out seven new offerings, including spam protection measures, a national Wi-Fi roaming service, a fibre-based intranet TV service, and a direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity solution.
New Developments at BSNL
BSNL’s 4G launch is preceded by the introduction of an advanced 4G and 5G-ready over-the-air (OTA) and Universal SIM (USIM) platform in August. This move underscores the company’s readiness for the upcoming network expansion.
The new logo was officially unveiled at BSNL’s headquarters in New Delhi, in the presence of prominent figures such as Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, and Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications Neeraj Mittal.
Seven New Services Unveiled
Among the new services, BSNL announced an automatic spam protection measure to filter out malicious SMS and phishing attempts without alerting users. A Wi-Fi roaming service for fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) consumers promises high-speed internet access at BSNL hotspots, reducing data costs. The fibre-based intranet TV service offers over 500 live channels and a Pay TV facility, with data used for TV streaming not counted against the FTTH pack.
Innovative Customer Solutions
BSNL is making it more convenient to obtain or upgrade connections through new Any Time SIM (ATM) kiosks. These kiosks enable users to purchase, replace, upgrade, or port their SIM cards anytime, utilizing QR-enabled UPI payments and multi-lingual support.
The new D2D service converges satellite and terrestrial mobile networks, beneficial for UPI payments in emergencies and remote regions. Additionally, BSNL is rolling out an encrypted communications platform for government and relief agencies, leveraging balloon-based and drone-based systems to enhance coverage in disaster-affected areas.
Partnership with C-DAC
BSNL has partnered with C-DAC to introduce a private 5G network for mining services. This network will enable AI and IoT applications in underground and opencast mines, providing high-speed, low-latency connectivity. The technology aims to improve safety analytics, real-time control of automated guided vehicles (AGVs), remote maintenance using augmented reality (AR), and fleet tracking and optimization.
