The European Union completed a common charging port for mobile phones, tablets, headphones and cameras last year. This time, we have revised the EU regulations for batteries sold in the region, including making the batteries replaceable.
A new law passed by the European Parliament requires portable batteries in devices to be designed so that consumers can easily remove and replace them themselves. The regulation applies to all rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles and mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and other devices sold within the EU.
Last week, the EU parliament voted 587 to 9 to approve amendments to previous regulations on batteries and used batteries. The new regulation is intended to affect the design, production and disposal management of all rechargeable batteries sold in the EU, making them longer lasting, more sustainable and with better performance increase.
According to the new law, portable batteries must be designed so that they can be easily removed and replaced by ordinary users. As already mentioned, this includes not only industrial batteries, but also batteries for cars, smartphones, cameras and tablets.
The new guidelines mandate carbon declarations, labels and digital passports for electric vehicles, bicycles and industrial rechargeable batteries with a capacity greater than 2 kWh.
To facilitate battery recycling, the new regulations also set requirements for recyclable materials used in new batteries. Portable battery collection targets are 45 percent by 2023, 63 percent by 2027 and 73 percent by 2030.
The collection target for batteries in “light transport” vehicles such as electric scooters is 51 percent by 2028 and 61 percent by 2031.The EU has also set recovery targets for incorporated substances. The goal is to recover 50% of the lithium by 2027 and 80% by 2031. For cobalt, copper, lead and nickel, the EU has set targets of 90% by 2027 and 95% by 2031.
This EU new rules challenging to tech giants like Appke, Samsung and Xiaomi. These Brand Products Smartphones and Laptop’s Batteries packing with non-removable batteries. So, that these companies should face redesign challenges.
