The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced new guidelines allowing mobile users to keep their SIM cards active for up to 90 days without requiring a recharge. This initiative aims to assist users who maintain secondary SIM cards for emergencies or specific purposes, reducing the need for frequent recharges.
Key Highlights of the New TRAI Guidelines
- 90-Day Inactivity Period: SIM cards from major telecom operators—Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL—will remain active without recharge for 90 days. During this period, incoming call services may vary based on the user’s last recharge plan.
- Automatic Extension with Prepaid Balance: If a SIM remains inactive for 90 days but has a prepaid balance of at least Rs 20, this amount will be deducted to extend the SIM’s validity by an additional 30 days. This process can continue, allowing users to keep their SIM active for up to 120 days without a new recharge.
- Grace Period for Reactivation: After the 90-day inactivity period (or up to 120 days with balance deductions), users are granted a 15-day grace period to reactivate their SIM cards. During this time, users can contact customer care or visit a company store to restore their services. Failure to reactivate within this period will result in permanent deactivation, and the number may be reassigned to new users.
Operator-Specific Details
- Jio: SIMs remain active for 90 days without recharge. After this period, a reactivation plan is required to maintain services.
- Airtel: Offers a 90-day active period without recharge, followed by a 15-day grace period for reactivation. If no recharge is made within the grace period, the SIM will be deactivated and reassigned.
- Vi : Provides a 90-day active period without recharge. To maintain activation after this period, users must recharge with a minimum plan of Rs 49.
- BSNL: Offers the longest validity, keeping SIMs active for up to 180 days without recharge, making it suitable for users who prefer infrequent recharges.
These new TRAI regulations are designed to reduce the hassle of frequent recharges and help users save money, especially those who use secondary SIM cards sparingly. By understanding and utilizing these guidelines, users can ensure their SIM cards remain active without incurring unnecessary expenses.
