Canonical has initiated the development cycle for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, codenamed “Noble Numbat,” and has unveiled the initial daily build ISO images for early adopters, application developers, and general public testing.
These first daily builds of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS are based on the previous release, Ubuntu 23.10, also known as “Mantic Minotaur,” which was launched on October 12th.
Since these initial builds inherit core components and application versions from the previous release, significant changes should not be expected at this stage.
Over the course of the six-month development cycle, the daily builds of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will receive updates that incorporate the latest GNU/Linux technologies and open-source software. This includes upcoming components like the GNOME 46 desktop environment, Mesa 23.3 graphics stack, and potentially the Linux 6.8 kernel series.
Beneath the surface, you can anticipate the integration of GNU/Linux technologies such as GCC 13.2, GNU C Library 2.39, Ruby 3.2, and more. Canonical is likely to introduce additional Snap packages and new features as development progresses.
The initial daily build ISO images for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS are now available for download on the official website. Daily builds are also accessible for various official Ubuntu flavors, including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu. These daily builds are compatible with 64-bit (amd64) and AArch64 (ARM64) platforms.
However, it’s essential to note that these are pre-release versions, and they may contain bugs and other issues that could hinder a stable Ubuntu desktop or server experience. Therefore, it’s not recommended to install them on a production machine.
The final release of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, “Noble Numbat,” is scheduled for April 25th, 2024. Leading up to the official release, the beta version is set to be available for testing on April 4th, 2024, and the Release Candidate (RC) version on April 18th, 2024.
